8. PROFILES IN BREWING: by Bobby Bush, author of Beer and Loafing

Don Richardson of Carolina Beer & Beverage

Unlike most professional brewers, Don Richardson did not start off with 5-gallon home
brew beers. Transplanted to Boulder CO to attend school, the Atlanta-native applied
for a delivery job at Rockies Brewing Company. Denied this position due to his small
stature but still in need of employment, Richardson accepted a job on the bottling line.
Six months later, he jumped at the chance to join the brewing team. That's when he
became a home brewer, a hobby that ignited his passion for brewing.

By late 1996, he'd worked his way up to Assistant Brewer, but yearned for more. He accepted the head brewer's position with Cottonwood Brewery, a Boone NC brewpub and moved east in January 1997. But Cottonwood was in
the midst of relocating to a downtown spot. Instead of brewing - though he kept the home brew fire burning - Don
spent his first eight months with the company assembling the brewhouse and waiting.

When Cottonwood Brewery and Howard Street Grill reopened in September, Don wasted little time. His first batch of Low Down Brown Ale won a bronze medal at the '97 Great American Beer Festival. History would repeat for Don, often. His Horton's Irish Stout struck silver in '98, followed by bronze the next year for seasonal Great Pumpkin Spiced Ale. His Cottonwood Wall of Foam also includes three World Beer Championship certificates and a 2000 World Beer Cup silver medallion for the Pumpkin Ale.

In mid-2000, Richardson became head brewer for Carolina Beer & Beverage, a Mooresville NC microbrewery. Though the crafty brewer left Boone behind, he did not forsake Cottonwood. Carolina owner Mike Smith acquired rights to the Cottonwood beers, so Don got to "keep [his] babies." He also has a new litter to oversee. Though the changes will mostly be subtle, if noticeable at all, look for Don's touch in Carolina Blonde, the company's biggest seller, Carolina Light and the Pale Ale, Wheat and Brown under the Charleston label.

In just a few short months, Don seems to have found a home at Carolina. The feeling is mutual. With that kind of support, the sky is the limit for Don Richardson and Carolina Beer. As their grows, look for Carolina, Charleston and Cottonwood beer throughout NC, SC, and in Savannah, Knoxville and Norfolk. Call ahead for tours.

1. NEWS

Unfortunately, we open the premiere edition of the Buzz on a very sad note. Jim Newman, 33,
head brewer for Cannon Brewpub in Columbus GA, was killed this past December by an
accidental firearms discharge (unrelated to the brewpub's signature cannon.) William Gantt,
Cannon president, who started the brewpub with Jim in February of 1999, says that it has
understandably been a very difficult time for everyone involved. Jim's assistant, Josh Curfiss,
has taken over the brewing operations and is being helped by Steve Freid, who tutored Jim,
William, and Josh at McGuire's in Pensacola FL. If you would like to know more, or simply
wish to convey sympathies to the Cannon staff, contact William Gantt at (706) 653-2337.
January 2001 Newsletter

Welcome to the debut issue of the Beer South Buzz,

The goal of this newsletter is to keep you posted on whatever news the Beer South editorial team uncovers each month. But, as spirited as we are about turning up news, we still need your help in two ways.
First, take a look at the listings in the Beer South state guides and send us any corrections necessary. Then,
let us know of any news items, personnel changes or brewing operations that open, close or are planned.

We're currently completing the new Map Link feature on the Beer South site which links all brewpubs and micros
to Mapquest maps and in coming months, look for a directory to southern home brew clubs and guilds.

Bear with us through the first few issues as we fine tune the Buzz. Thanks for signing on and please forward
this newsletter to your beer pals. Send all tips, comments & complaints to us at beersouth@mindspring.com
The material presented on this site is based on information believed to be correct, but is subject
to change at anytime. If you have an update, correction, suggestion or any other contribution,
please send it to us at: beersouth@mindspring.com. We welcome your input.
