1. NEWS

The big news that broke as the last Buzz went to press was that Florida rescinded its law restricting the size of beer bottles. Governor Jeb Bush signed into law the legislation which will allow Florida beer and cider to be sold in all size containers 32 ounces or smaller. The bill eliminates a decades-old ban on retail sale of any beer bottle or can that isn't 8, 12, 16 or 32 ounces. The measure takes effect October 1 and should increase the availability of domestic craft beers (some are available only in 22-ounce bottles) and imports (which occasionally use metric) that may be sold state-wide. Cheers to our comrades in the Sunshine State!

Big Buck Brewery and Steakhouse (BBUC), the Wisconsin-based chain with designs on the Nashville market, has been granted additional time to comply with the NASDAQ minimum $1.00 bid requirements. They now have until
October 22 to meet the guidelines in order to remain listed on the exchange. At press time, the company's stock was trading in a range from 75 to 95 cents.

Think you might be worthy of the title "Beer Drinker of the Year?" Two of the last four winners have been from the South, including last year's winner, Cornelia Corey of Clemmons NC. If you think you have what it takes, we urge you to enter the 2002 contest. The deadline for entry into the 2002 competition is November 8, 2001. For complete details see: http://www.wynkoop.com/

Ron Raike - The Shipyard Brewing Company, Orlando, Florida

There are brewpubs in old churches, brewpubs in bowling alleys, brewpubs in
defunct banks, but there's only one brewpub in an active US airport. Founded
in the 19th century shipyard town of Kennebunk, Maine back in 1992, Shipyard
Brewing Company prospered, growing to the point that a 100 barrel brewery was
established in 1994 in Portland, aine just to keep up with demand. In '97, under
the guidance of owner Fred Forsley and brewmaster Alan Pugsley, Shipyard
reached far south to the airport terminal in Orlando, Florida to establish their
third brewpub. And Florida native Ron Raike was just the man to make it work.

Feeling trapped in a University of Central Florida computer engineering masters
program, Raike suddenly took a mid-term left turn into brewing. He's had no
reason to look back. Crowned the Southeast's Homebrewer of the Year in
1995-96, brewing came much more naturally to Ron than 0's and 1's. He signed
on with Shipyard, training on the seven barrel brewhouse at Kennebunkport's
Federal Jack's Brew Pub and later on the 100 barrel system in Portland.

So Ron was well prepared for the job when he returned to his home state in 1997 to open The Shipyard Brew Pub, which is technically a microbrewery with an adjacent pub. In spite of Florida's arcane beer laws, Shipyard
thrives in the hectic airport environment. Working with a 20 barrel system, Ron keeps five beers on tap at The Shipyard Pub, which is just across the tiled hallway from the glass-walled brewery in terminal A, and
Shipyard Brewport in terminal C. Four of the five are Shipyard standards. Shipyard Export, the bars' best seller, is a medium bodied, sweet foretasting and low bitter finishing American Golden Ale. Light Ale is just that, light and an interesting bicycle brew. Old Thumper, judged the 1988 English Supreme Champion beer, is brewed with a recipe licensed from England's award-winning Ringwood Brewery. It is an enticing hybrid, falling somewhere between an English Strong Ale and an ESB, while Bluefin Stout, served nitro creamy, is a smooth, dark and foreboding classic Irish stout. Seasonals include an American Wheat-style Summer Ale, Fuggles IPA,
UK-style Shipyard Brown Ale and the stronger, dark Winter Ale.

Raike was an early member of the extremely busy Florida Brewers Guild. He served as the association's State Director for three years. This group was instrumental in remedying Florida's ridiculous bottle law which
effectively stopped metric size imported bottles and 22 ounce microbrewery bottles at the state line. Anxious to reap the rewards of the Guild's hard work, Raike hopes to install a bottling line in his brewery in 2002. The
revised law, it's interesting to note, does not allow bottles larger than 32 ounces, take-home growlers are still forbidden in Florida.

Shipyard brewed just over 1000 barrels in each of the last two years. It was all consumed in Florida, but not all at the airport. Shipyard kegged beer is distributed from Jacksonville to Cocoa Beach. Raike also brews six
different contract beers which are served at other area establishments. Even the beer produced at the airport must take a 45 minute trip to a downtown distributor and back just to be served legally at the airport pub. In my humble opinion, the best beer in the huge state of Florida can be found in the Orlando International Airport. Who cares if your flight is on time? Shipyard Brewing is a traveler's delight.

Greetings,

Important Note to all Readers:

Listbot, the owner and facilitator of the Beer South Buzz e-mail newsletter, has informed all of its list owners
that effective August 20, 2001, the free version of their service will be discontinued. In order to continue using
Lisbot owners must upgrade to a pay service. Since we intend to keep publishing the Buzz for free, we won't
be upgrading. Instead, we will convert the existing mailing list (which you are already on) over to Topica, another free list management service. We are in the process of moving all existing Buzz subscribers over to the new list -
so with any luck at all - you will not have to do anything in order to keep your Buzz subscription ongoing.
If this should change, we'll let you know. Thanks for your patience and understanding.
