Atlanta-based Black Bear Brewing has purchased the historic Yakima Brewing and Malting Company of Yakima WA from Stimson Lane Vineyards & Estates in Woodinville WA. Included in the deal is Grant's Brewpub, the first modern brewpub to open in the United States. Yakima Brewing was founded in 1982 by Bert Grant, who died last year at the age of 73, in the heart of the nation's premier hops-growing region. "Yakima Brewing is going to be the cornerstone of our plans to assemble a network of breweries across the United States," said Paul Brown, president of Black Bear. Black Bear plans to continue producing Yakima Brewing's line of Bert Grant's specialty beers. The move caught many in the brewing industry by surprise as Black Bear Brewing has for several years, without apparent success, solicited investors for an Atlanta-based microbrewery operation, complete with with a web-based prospectus (a dated reference may be seen at: http://www.probrewer.com/library/1096net.html) and a website (which is no longer online.) We wish them luck. Source: various web sources, including BrewsGram & Real Beer

Fran Andrewlevich - BrewZZi Microbrewery Bakery Pizza, Boca Raton FL
It all started in 1994 when Fran Andrewlevich began hanging around Irish Times, a Palm Beach Gardens, Florida brewpub. Just a beginning homebrewer, curiosity revealed that large batch brewing was much more intriguing and certainly more challenging than five gallon brew kettles. Within six months, the unpaid rookie-turned-professional took over as Irish Times' head brewer. Hard work and perseverance led to his first Great American Beer Festival gold medal in 1995 for Irish Times English Brown.
While still working in Palm Beach Gardens, Fran accepted a moonlighting brewing job at Kelly's Caribbean Bar & Grill, one hundred and eighty miles away in Key West. This far south brewpub's owners flew Fran down to the tip of the Keys every two to three weeks just to brew. By 1998, the island brewer had trained a full-time Kelly's brewer, bringing an end to the trans-Florida commute.
Meanwhile, BrewZZi Microbrewery, Bakery & Pizza opened in August 1997. Less than one year later, Andrewlevich left Irish Times for good and took a part-time position with the new brewpub in Boca Raton 1998. By October 1999, BrewZZi was his full-time employer. About the time Fran began this new job, BrewZZi owners decided to shift brewing perspectives. Originally an all-ale brewhouse, lagers were given new priority. Though he had previously brewed only a handful of lagers, the now-seasoned brewmaster took on this new venture with zeal.
The BrewZZi brewery consists of a steam-fired 15-barrel brewhouse and five 15-barrel fermenters with an equal number of serving vessels. Fran's basic staple of six recipes keeps four tap handles well supplied. Boca Fest is Marzen/Vienna in style. Fest's flavor derives from a blend of Munich and Crystal malts. Aroma is nutty and sweet, resulting in a proper lager festbier. Naturally, Boca Blonde is BrewZZi's most popular beer, a bright golden, simple but flavorful lager. Tropical Madness utilizes an identical recipe, enhanced with fruit extract that gives this cool, hot weather drink just a hint of apricot, blueberry, peach and raspberry essence.
Black Duke Dark is a deep amber brown Dunkel. Medium bodied, it offers hints of chocolate and roasted coffee flavor at only 4% abv. Boca Alt is well balanced and fruity/malty, while Oatmeal Stout is a full bodied yet silky smooth brew teeming with roasty, toasty, chocolatey goodness.
Fran attributes his brewing success to the use of top quality, often imported ingredients. And to his boss, who allows Fran the "freedom to brew odd beer," even though he throws one out every once in a while. Certainly a great deal of brewing credit for BrewZZi Microbrewery, Bakery & Pizza's four Great American Beer Festival medals must go to the brewer himself. Gold for Alt and silver for Munich Helles in 2000, followed twelve months later by another mixed pair: gold for the Alt again and silver in the European Pilsner category. Not bad for a brewer with seven years in the professional ranks.
There's a new BrewZZi in West Palm Beach. This 11,000 square foot City Place brewpub seats 420. Brewer Andrewlevich, aided by an able assistant, mans this brewery as well.

Greetings,
Whoo Hoo! This issue marks the anniversary of the first Beer South Buzz. We appreciate the input and readership from everyone out there. We managed to survive the switch from Listbot to Topica without any nasty bruises or black eyes. Oddly, despite our repeated notifications, a number of subscribers of the Listbot edition disappeared when we jumped to Topica in order to remain a free service. We miss you, but hey, that's the web for ya', and free choice is what an opt-in newsletter is all about.
Did you make any New Year's resolutions? If you did, or even if you didn't, could you make one for us? Our goal is to get the newsletter into the hands (and computers) of as many people as possible. We'd like to ask every reader to resolve to convince just one friend, associate or rank stranger to subscribe this year. Mathematically, that would double the reader base, but realistically, as we gain new readers, subscriptions will likely grow exponentially. So, brothahs and sistahs, if you will, help us spread the good word. Forward a copy of this newsletter to anyone who might find it interesting. - The Beer Bwana |
